Chapter Nine

It had been a few years since Jake had been down in evidence, but he remembered where everything was located. He hit the first switch of the four on the wall and a line of overhead lights illuminated the furthest row of shelves.

“This way,” Jake said absently to Cody.

At the end of each row was a table. Jake remembered there were tables halfway down the rows of shelving as well. The tables made accessing evidence stored at the end of the row more efficient than walking all the way back up the aisle.

“Every row has its own cabinet,” Jake indicated the two filing cabinets that they had stopped in front of and opened the top drawer. “Each cabinet contains the evidence files. They are filed alphabetically then by date.”

Cody groaned and Jake laughed. “Now, you see why I said don’t get too excited?”

Cody did. He had thought they would be checking files in the computer based on the oldest dates. He had no idea they would have to physically look for the oldest files and under every letter of the alphabet.

“Don’t they have someone who does this full time?” Cody had to ask because he could understand how this type of job could easily get out of control.

“Yeah. The first shift has an officer assigned to do this, but it’s always more than one person can handle.”

“No shit,” Cody commented dryly.

“So, anyway.” Jake glanced to Cody before opening the top drawer of the filing cabinet. “When we locate the oldest file in the section, we look it up in the computer.” He nodded toward the dark workstation they had passed earlier. “If the case has been dismissed or closed, we can pull the evidence stored on the shelf and mark it to be destroyed before we put it in that bin over there.” Jake indicated a large wooden bin in the corner of the room. “If the case is still open or in appeal, we don’t have to do anything.”

Cody looked from Jacob to the cabinet, then to the bin, then back again. The job itself wasn’t hard or complicated until one looked at the pure volume of files in just the first drawer of the cabinet. Then it seemed monumental. Not only monumental, but one that didn’t need much rapport. They could each take a cabinet, find files, pull them up in the computer, and make the call on whether the evidence should be destroyed or not without even saying a word to one another.

If not for the brief bantering on the way down here, Cody would be sure this assignment was more preferable to Jacob than being stuck in a patrol car with someone he hated.

“I’m thinking, if one of us pulls files then the other can check the computer and once we get a stack we can both pull the evidence,” Jake suggested. “That way we don’t end up halfway through two different sections in the filing cabinet and the day shift will know exactly where we left off when we finally get back on the streets.
